PREP BASEBALL: Lake City erupts in 2nd game for sweep

COEUR d'ALENE - Cody Garza hit a two-run triple and later scored in the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game, and the Lake City Timberwolves went on to beat the Post Falls Trojans 7-5 and 28-1 in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday at Lake City High.

"We pitched it pretty well and had quite a few defensive plays that kept us in the game until our bats got going in the first game," Lake City coach Travis Georgius said. "We just swung the bats really well in the second game and got out to a good start."

J.J. Winger had two RBIs in the first game, Carter Chaffin struck out eight in three innings and Mitch Bevacqua had five hits in the second game for Lake City (4-5, 2-2 5A IEL), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

Austin Buschbacher had two RBIs in the first game for Post Falls (4-5, 1-2), which hosts Lewiston in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

LEWISTON - Levi Pereira went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Vikings, which won the second game 7-6 in eight innings after losing the first game 2-1 to the Bengals in 5A IEL play at Church Field.

"It was good for us to get the split," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "We just need to continue to improve and be accountable for ourselves on the field."

Alec Barrowcliff, Sean Sutton and Jonny Plum had two hits each for Coeur d'Alene (9-3, 1-2 5A IEL), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

Brett Martin had a two-run single in the first game for Lewiston, which is 10-1, 3-1.

SPIRIT LAKE - Trevor Masterson and Austin Allen finished the day with five RBIs each for the Tigers, which swept an Intermountain League doubleheader from the Badgers.

In the first game, Masterson had two RBIs, then went 3 for 3 with three doubles and a run scored in the second for Timberlake (7-5, 3-0 IML), which faces Bonners Ferry again on Tuesday in Bonners Ferry.

"I'm just glad we got both games in," Timberlake coach Bill Rider said. "I wasn't sure we'd get them in this morning, but we played well, especially for how bad the weather is. We finally figured out to stop making excuses and just played well."

Bonners Ferry is 5-8, 0-3.

ST. MARIES - Jordan Stapleton struck out nine and Janks Maier hit a three-run triple in the fourth inning as the Lumberjacks beat the Maniacs in a Central Idaho League game at City Park.

"It was a big league win for us," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "We had all kinds of weather today, from rain, wind and snow, but the kids did a good job of playing right through it."

D.J. Turner went 3 for 4 with an RBI for St. Maries (7-1, 4-0 CIL), which hosts Kendrick-Deary on Thursday.
