PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Sandpoint wins shortened game

| September 30, 2012 9:00 PM

LEWISTON - Bailey Scrimsher scored the game-winning goal in the second half, leading Sandpoint to a 1-0 win over Lewiston (2-9-3) in a nonleague soccer game on Saturday.

Due to a schedule mix-up, the game was shortened to 25-minute halves, with Scrimsher's goal coming in the 35th minute. Makayla Sundquist notched her seventh shutout in goal for the Bulldogs (10-2-3), who haven't lost all year against Inland Empire League competition.

"The girls played well for only having a five-minute warmup, and were able to calm down in the second half and put the game away," said Bulldogs assistant Julie Pitre, lauding the effort of the defense. "Athena Robinson did a great job shutting down their attack, and Makayla again came up big for us with a shutout."

Sandpoint is at Moscow on Tuesday.

Freshman Olivia Miller had two goals for Post Falls (9-6), the 5A IEL champion, which hosts fourth-seeded Lewiston in the semifinals of the 5A Region 1 tournament on Thursday.

"For us to get two goals from Olivia, that's what we're trying to do and get the younger players involved," Anderson said. "All in all, they're going to be big in helping us achieve what we're trying to do."

She was standing 18 yards out where the line meets the penalty box, beat our defender and chipped it over our 6-foot-2 goalie with a little backspin and put it in. She's definitely the player of the year in the IML this year."
