BALLOT: Asking wrong question

| September 23, 2012 9:00 PM

Are the Kootenai County Commissioners trying to confuse the voters on purpose? The ballot language for the half-baked idea of changing our county government and giving up our right to vote for who will represent us as the Clerk, Assessor, Treasurer, etc., should be simple. The question could have been a yes/no question like “Do you support giving up your right to vote for some positions in county government so the commissioners can appoint a Czar to run the county?”

Instead, the two choices both start with “In Favor of…” I wish they had put a third option on it, like “In Favor of retaining the present form of county government, minus the incumbent commissioners.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, they fail to mention in the narrative that if we did vote for this silly scheme (no other county in Idaho has tried this form of government) we won’t be able to change our minds when we come to our senses. True, they did point out that we wouldn’t be able to change to another optional form of government for four years, but they omitted the fact that we can’t change back to our present form of government for four years, either. Why would they do that?

So, with the choices we have been given, I guess, vote to retain the present form of government. In regard to the commissioners on the ballot, choose your favorite write in candidate.
