PREP SOCCER: Opland leads Hawk boys past Sandpoint

SANDPOINT - Lakeland capitalized on a couple of defensive miscues by Sandpoint, grabbing a 2-1 win in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both teams Tuesday night at War Memorial Field.

Anthony Fox scored his ninth goal of the season just four minutes into the game, giving the Bulldogs (6-3, 0-1 4A IEL) a 1-0 lead, which stood up until the half.

Alex Opland took advantage of a defensive miscue in the 45th minute, scoring the equalizer when he had a free run in front of the goal and beat the keeper one on one.

Opland scored the go-ahead goal 15 minutes later on a penalty kick after a Lakeland player was held in the box. Lakeland (3-3-1, 1-0 4A IEL) keeper Cade Coffey made the lead stand up with several saves.

"We came out flat in the first five minutes, and it took a goal against us to wake us up," Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. "Alex and Cade were the players of the game; both were outstanding."

COEUR d'ALENE - Graison Le's second goal of the game, in the 75th minute, helped the host Vikings salvage a tie with the Bears.

"We're a little disappointed with the result," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said."We had opportunities to win, we just gave up some goals on set plays and lacked a little focus today - and the result showed."

Johnny Dance had a goal and an assist for Coeur d'Alene (5-1-2), which plays at Lake City on Thursday.

ST. MARIES - Kade Murphree scored two unassisted goals in the second half to lead the Timberwolf junior varsity past the Lumberjacks.

"We played remarkably well in the first half," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "Unfortunately, we came out flat in the second half. We really held the possession in the first half. I thought Lake City played really well and it was a well-played game. Unfortunately on our end, if you don't shoot, you can't score."

Cody Posselt had five saves for St. Maries (3-3-0), which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

POST FALLS - Freshmen Sadie Schmeling and Persia Anderson scored the first two goals for the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League win over the Bengals.

"It was pretty exciting for our freshmen to score our first two goals," Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. "We've been working all season on getting our freshmen going. The key for our season is to get them involved and having them score shows the work is paying off."

Kelcie Hedge had a goal and an assist for Post Falls (5-4, 3-1 5A IEL), which travels to Lake City on Saturday.

Lewiston falls to 0-3-1 in league.

KELLOGG - Jessi Gibbons scored the go-ahead goal on an assist from Erin Garner as the Wildcats beat the Panthers in an Intermountain League match at Teeters Field.

Cd'A Charter took the lead on a goal by Katie Baxter in the 41st minute, but Gibbons tied the game on the ensuing kickoff to even the match at 1.

"We started really slow," Kellogg coach Steve Mills said. "We came off the Bonners (Ferry) game and thought we were playing better, but we came to life after getting scored on. (Cd'A) Charter played extremely hard and they pushed us hard all night long."

Coeur d'Alene Charter (2-5, 2-3 IML) travels to Timberlake on Saturday.

Kellogg (3-2-1, 3-2-1) travels to Priest River on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Liz Racer scored two unassisted goals to lead the Badgers past the Tigers in an Intermountain League match at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

"I'm very proud of the girls," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "We never gave up and had some chances. Bonners is a good team and it's not so bad losing a match when you play well."

Traci Wall scored in the 74th minute for Timberlake (5-3-1, 4-2 IML), which hosts Coeur d'Alene Charter on Saturday.
