In appreciation of seniors

National Assisted Living Week, Sept. 9-15, is a way of focusing our attention - and our gratitude - on some of our community's lesser-seen and heard individuals.

The graying of America is upon us. Nationwide, nearly 1 million people count on assisting living. Their average age is just shy of 87 years. About 74 percent are female and 26 percent are male. The typical assisted living resident is mobile, but needs help with one or two tasks every day.

But these are just statistics. For those of us who specialize in senior living, we see the faces and hear the stories. Each one of these people has a remarkable tale to tell.

We discover the vital things they did for their families, professions and country - and still continue doing to this day. We gain valuable wisdom and perspective. Many of these people were veterans or civil servants. Some were captains of industry, while others were captains of their home.

Whatever their history, this remarkable generation deserves our respect and admiration. I am proud to play a role in an industry that fosters choice, dignity, independence and autonomy in our elders.

During National Assisted Living Week, I invite you to recognize the worth of age and wisdom. I ask that you reach out to someone you know in retirement or assisted living who would welcome that letter, call or personal visit.

Join me in celebrating all of our seniors throughout North Idaho. Remember that their contributions, big and small, made possible our way of life as Americans today.
