| September 1, 2012 9:00 PM

LEWISTON - The Lakeland Hawks turned the ball over five times, losing to the Lewiston Bengals 20-7 at Bengal Field on Friday night in the season opener for both.

"I thought we were somewhat tentative, especially offensively," Lakeland offensive coordinator Mike Bayley said. "Lewiston was pretty good and had a lot of speed and we had a hard time getting much going."

Lakeland quarterback Derek Bayley scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"They were in our backfield a lot," coach Bayley said. "They were bigger, stronger and faster than us tonight."

Lakeland travels to East Valley (Spokane) on Friday.

"Preston ran the ball extremely hard every time he touched the ball," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. "He was just determined to get a first down every time he touched the ball."

Forrest Herring had 76 yards rushing as Timberlake gained 416 yards on offense.

"It was a very entertaining game for the fans," Albertson said. "There wasn't a single punt in the game and it was just a wide-open football game."
