AKEY: Sympathy isn't running deep
I read with interest your comment, Coach Robb Akey, that you could use the lost $105,000 to feed your family. I was reminded of my first high school coaching job and the pay. I was assigned to coach JV football, basketball and baseball. I was also to teach a full load of classes.
We played our first football game and we lost 21-0. I then found out that this school had never won a junior varsity football game, and in fact, had never scored a touchdown. I made some changes. Our next game was with a team that had won their first game. We beat them 36-0. We went on to win five of our six remaining games.
My yearly salary was $4,500. This was to feed my wife, two small sons and myself for a year. We did it! And I am confident you will, too! However, just in case, you might want to locate the nearest food bank.
