LEWISTON — After coming up four points short of a state 5A title last year, the Coeur d’Alene Viking girls cross country team made up for it in a big way Saturday.

Led by sophomore Josie Brown’s second-place finish in 18 minutes and 13.50 seconds — along with four others finishing in the top 10 — the Vikings are back on top of the the state ranks for the first time since 2004, winning the 5A championship at the state cross country meet at Hells Gate State Park.

“It means they’re pretty darn good,” Coeur d’Alene coach Cathy Compton said of her team’s performance, which saw them win the state title with 29 points, ahead of Vallivue of Caldwell, which finished second with 87 points. “It really speaks volumes for their character. They wanted it and wanted it for each other — and they did it with grand style to say the least.”

In the 4A boys race, Sandpoint junior Sam Levora finished second in 15:49.20, 15 seconds behind winner Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello, who finished in 15:34.10.

“That’s really where we expected him,” Sandpoint coach Matt Brass said. “He went out and did exactly what he needed to do. He went out with Armstrong and got a gap between him and the field and ran a great race.”

In the 3A girls race, the Timberlake girls finished with their fifth consecutive trophy, finishing fourth after winning the state title the last three years.

“Honestly, with the kids we lost and going through some adversity during the season, I thought we ran really well,” Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler said. “I thought that the girls could be in the trophies again, and sure enough, they brought home a fourth-place trophy.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter junior Leif Fredericks finished third in the boys 2A race, helping the Panthers to a fourth-place finish.

“He really wanted this today,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Lewis Watkins said. “He was motivated and wanted to be in contention and it was a big accomplishment for him.”

5A: Compton said she was nervous for her team at the start of the race Saturday.

“It was outstanding,” Compton said. “I don’t know how I wasn’t throwing up before this race because I haven’t been so nervous my entire career. I was a wreck — but I didn’t need to be because I knew they’d come through. They used everything they’ve learned throughout the season and it was just a fabulous day.”

“It was a good race and we definitely had a good finish,” Brown said. “I had full faith that we could do it and we all performed our best today, so I was really happy. I have great teammates and we all push each other really hard and we definitely deserve it because we’ve worked hard all season long.”

Coeur d’Alene graduates only one senior — Punky Duran, who finished fifth. Kara Story was sixth, Emily Callahan seventh and Krista Story 10th.

“Hopefully we can move on from this,” Compton said. “We’re only losing one girl, but the rest of the girls are united. I’d hate to compare them to past teams, because they’re their own group.”

In the boys race, Jake Finney was fifth and Kyler Little sixth for Lake City, which finished seventh.

“I’m super proud of all of them,” Lake City coach Heather Harmon-Reed said. “Kyler and Jake have been running out front all year and Garrett Johnson stepped it up and made a big move. Despite the conditions, we ran a lot faster than last week (at the Region 1 championships at Hells Gate). This is going to continue to grow and progress next season.”

Michael Dunton finished eight for the Coeur d’Alene boys as the Vikings finished in third place, a year removed from winning a state title.

“It was just a good all-around day for us,” Compton said.

Dwain Stucker of Meridian won the boys race in 15:42.30 and Capital won the team title.

Emily Hamlin of Boise High won the girls race in 18:09.40.

4A: Brass said despite only qualifying two runners, he’s happy with the showing from Levora and senior Tim Prummer, who finished in 18:45.20. Mikaela Woodward finished 18th for the Bulldog girls, who finished eighth.

The top 20 finishers in each race received medals.

“For Tim, that was around his time for regionals,” Brass said. “To have Sam finish where he did is just good for the program. For the girls, it was a good competitive regional race and we lost to Moscow, but beat them today. Both our teams are young and competitive, and so is our league and it’s just going to make us more competitive at state.”

Levora, who finished fifth last year, had been waiting a long time for a race like Saturday’s.

“I’ve literally been working for this since June,” Levora said. “I’ve been training really hard this year and I’m happy with how we ran the race. I think it was a good wrap-up to the season. It was a perfect day for a race (cloudy with a slight drizzle during 4A boys race). Yesterday it was super muddy on the trails, but it was fine today. Overall, it’s a tricky course and you’ve got to be able to maneuver it.”

Casey Noye was Lakeland’s top placer, finishing 57th in 17:39.80.

Pocatello won the boys team title and Middleton won the girls.

Freshman Rachel McGovern of Pocatello won the girls race in 18:24.20.

3A: Rachel Ward was seventh and Natalie Herring eighth for Timberlake. Jamey Weishaar was 27th, helping bring another trophy back to Spirit Lake.

“Honestly, our top two girls in the top 10 were fantastic,” Lawler said. “Jamey is one of those girls that had she not stepped up, we wouldn’t have been in the trophy race today. We’re used to winning this thing, but it’s five years we’ve been a trophy team and I think any program could be proud of that.”

Priest River senior Steffie Pavey was 13th in 20:52.10.

“It’s cool, it’s fun,” Pavey said. “I know the rankings don’t mean much, but I was ranked higher than I’d been finishing in. It kind of gave me motivation toward the end of the season. I thought some of the other girls in the race were going to pick it up in the end, but they didn’t, so I decided to leave it all out on the course and finish with all I had.”

Ryan Richardson was 14th for the Timberlake boys, who finished fifth, just three points behind Kimberly, which edged the Tigers 117-120 for a fourth-place trophy.

“It’s the best race we’ve ran all season, no question about it,” Lawler said. “Our goal was to be fourth and I thought we were the sixth-best team in the state, so to finish fifth was big for us. To be three points out was fantastic. I’m very, very happy with how the boys finished.”

Luke Reoch was 10th for Bonners Ferry in 17:08.10.

Caleb Moosman of Teton won the boys race in 16:18, helping the Indians win the team title by two points over Sugar-Salem 68-70.

Olivia Redd of Sugar-Salem won the girls race in 18:33.90 as the Diggers claimed the team title.

2A: David Conway was ninth for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which finished three points behind Salmon for third place, but still trophied in fourth.

“I’m really happy with how they performed,” Watkins said. “This is probably the best team we’ve had. We came close to a district title last week. We were hoping for third or better, but fourth was great.”

“It means a lot,” Fredericks said. “We’ve came a long way with our team.”

Fredericks finished fourth last year.

“My coaches really helped me improve this year,” Fredericks said. “It was good to move up a spot. We’ve got a young, strong team and there’s plenty of room for improvement.”

Conrad Larson of Victory Charter won the boys race in 16:08.60. Logos of Moscow won the state title for the first time competing in a state event after joining the White Pine League from the Mountain Christian League this year in cross country and track.

Sierra Manzer of Melba won the girls race in 18:12.30 and Soda Springs ran away with the girls title, outscoring Melba 27-114 for a seventh straight championship.
