Citizen on patrol

Coeur d'Alene police said an alert citizen helped capture an armed robbery suspect on Thursday night.

Jon W. Hohnsbehn, 40, a transient who previously lived in Kellogg, was arrested after police said he robbed the Boulevard Food Mart at 1801 Northwest Blvd., and made off with a couple bottles of beer. A clerk at the store confronted Hohnsbehn, but he allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened to stab the clerk.

Hohnsbehn left on foot and walked toward Riverstone, police said.

David Travieso, 41, of Post Falls, was in the store and witnessed the alleged robbery.

Travieso began following Hohnsbehn, police said, keeping in phone contact with 911, providing the operator with Hohnsbehn's location.

Travieso said at one point Hohnsbehn allegedly picked up a rock and threatened him.

Police Chief Wayne Longo had just turned on to Northwest Boulevard when the robbery call was aired.

Two other officers responded to the call to assist the chief in locating the robbery suspect.

Longo soon found Hohnsbehn walking along the Centennial Trail just northwest of Beebe Boulevard.

Hohnsbehn was carrying a beer bottle and kept drinking out of it when the chief ordered him to drop the bottle and get down on the ground, police said.

Longo and the two officers were able to arrest Hohnsbehn.

In a news release, Longo praised Travieso's efforts.

"This citizen went above and beyond to help police capture a dangerous individual and protect our community from possible further harm," Longo said. "We are very grateful for the actions he took to help us arrest this violent offender."

Hohnsbehn was jailed and charged with robbery and aggravated assault.
