VANDALS: Hard but good decisions

| October 26, 2012 9:00 PM

I moved to this area two years ago and have been following Idaho athletics and am now a fan. I want to applaud Rob Spear and Duane Nellis for their decision to replace Robb Akey. Firing anyone is not an easy decision, but this is in the best interest of the Idaho football program. He is a good guy and was a player favorite, but that does not translate into wins. Idaho needs a coach who can recruit and instill the toughness and discipline that is necessary to win.

I also applaud the decision to join the Big Sky Conference in all sports except football. I don’t think Idaho has a long-term future as an independent in football, and if the new coach with next year’s team does not show significant improvement, Idaho should also join the Big Sky in football. Division 1A football programs do not want to come and play in the Kibbie Dome and Idaho cannot play all away “money” games.

There is nothing wrong in admitting that the football program and facility is not up to Division 1A standards. By joining the Big Sky there is the opportunity to develop many natural rivalries and also have the opportunity to play for a National Championship.

I also think Idaho should try to schedule Washington State in Pullman every year as their first game the way Northern Arizona plays at Arizona State in their first game every year. This would help recruiting.

Go Vandals!
