St. Maries woman dies in accident

ST. MARIES - A 73-year-old St. Maries woman died on Monday during a one-vehicle accident on Benewah Road in the St. Maries area.

Two others were injured.

According to Idaho State Police, Edward M. Nordin, 76, St. Maries, was westbound near milepost 3 at 11:38 a.m. when the 1997 GMC truck he was driving went off the road, struck a tree and caught on fire.

A passenger, Marjorie F. Welch, St. Maries, was thrown from the vehicle and died as a result of her injuries.

Nordin and another passenger, Connie K. Nordin, 68, St. Maries, were both injured and transported to Benewah Community Hospital in St. Maries. A hospital spokeswoman on Monday night said the Nordins declined to release any information on their condition.

None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Wallace viaduct work to close I-90 lane

The eastbound driving lane on Interstate 90 over the Wallace Viaduct will be closed through the winter as the result of a damaged bridge joint. The closure begins Wednesday, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

A bridge joint was damaged over the Memorial Day weekend, and a temporary steel plate was placed over the joint. The temporary repair does not allow for winter snow removal in the eastbound driving lane.

The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph through the one-lane area.

A permanent joint repair will be done by state maintenance crews in the spring.

Food among items taken in home burglary

COEUR d'ALENE - When burglars broke into a home in the 800 block of North 5th Place on Sunday, they snatched the usual jewelry and coins thieves tend to target.

Seems they were hungry, too.

According to a police report, the homeowner left for work about 2:30 p.m. and returned home around midnight to find that someone had forced the back door open. Once inside, suspects left items on the floor of the house and generally made a mess.

The homeowner called police.

Jewelry valued at $330 and a bag of pennies worth $3 was missing.

Thieves also checked the refrigerator and freezer and stole packages of steaks and hot dogs, and four bags of chicken worth $40.
