Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston to play for regional title

LEWISTON - Kayla McGlathery had 17 kills and two aces as No. 3 seed Coeur d'Alene beat No. 2 Lake City for the second time in five days, 14-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament Saturday at Booth Hall.

Coeur d'Alene (19-10) will play at top-seeded Lewiston (25-4) in the championship match Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the state tournament Oct. 26-27 at Bonneville High in Idaho Falls. Later on Saturday, Lewiston defeated No. 4 Post Falls 25-8, 25-14, 25-18.

Post Falls (14-22) will play at Lake City (15-5) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a loser-out match. The two remaining teams play Wednesday for a berth in a state play-in match next Saturday.

Megan Ramseyer had 17 assists and eight digs for Coeur d'Alene. Ashley Hammons had 19 assists, Amy Norris seven digs, Miranda Miller two aces, Sydney Williams two blocks.

"It was a tough battle, I'm so proud of my girls," Coeur d'Alene coach Dee Pottenger said. "This tournament's not over. We're focused and excited to play on Tuesday."

Kaity Widmyer had 24 assists and three aces, and Kylie Curtis had 19 kills and eight assists for Lake City. Kasey Widmyer had seven kills, Brenna Condon eight digs, Madi Farrell six kills and two aces, and Natalie Taylor three aces for the Timberwolves.

Lewiston defeated Post Falls 25-8, 25-14, 25-18 in the other semifinal at Booth Hall.

Savannah Hill had eight kills, Brenna Meehan 18 assists and Brooke Litalien 19 digs for Post Falls.

"I thought we played well, but Lewiston is really good," Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. "There's a reason why they're the No. 1 seed. I thought we were fairly aggressive on offense, but Lewiston dug everything we gave them."

St. Maries sweeps, wins CIL title

OROFINO - Mariah Gladden totaled 30 kills and Kathy Epler 61 assists as the Lumberjacks defeated the Grangeville Bulldogs and Orofino Maniacs in Central Idaho League play at Orofino High to win the league title and No. 1 seed to the 2A District 1-2 tournament starting Tuesday in Moscow at Bear Den.

It is St. Maries' first year in the CIL after dropping down from the 3A classification this year.

Gladden had 15 kills, Lakin Anxo 11 kills and six digs as the Lumberjacks beat the Bulldogs 25-21, 25-16, 25-12. Epler had 30 assists, Maddy McQueen six digs for St. Maries.

Later, Epler had 31 assists as the Lumberjacks beat the Maniacs 25-20, 25-17, 25-14.

"We really didn't play up to our potential," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "But we still had pretty good control of both games. We need to cut back on some of our errors, but all-around, I thought we played well."

Gladden had 15 kills, Anxo 11 kills, McQueen nine digs, Clarissa Stephenson six digs and Kristina Halverson two blocks against Orofino for St. Maries (16-13, 6-0 CIL), which faces No. 4 seed Coeur d'Alene Charter (2-14, 0-6) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Moscow. No. 3 seed Orofino will face No. 2 seed Grangeville (23-12, 4-2) at 7:30, with the winners advancing to the championship match on Thursday at 5.

Grangeville defeated Coeur d'Alene Charter 25-9, 25-17, 25-15. No score was available for Charter's match vs. Orofino.

N.I. Christian d. Country Christian

COEUR d'ALENE - Liz Bookamer had nine aces and Courtney Lawson added eight assists as the Royals beat Country Christian of Pasco, Wash., 25-20, 25-8, 25-8 in a nonleague match at Project CDA.

Ashlynn Batchelor had nine kills, Maura Lund eight digs for North Idaho Christian (9-6), which hosts Genesis Prep on Tuesday at North Idaho Christian School.

McInturff top local finisher at meet

POTLATCH - Kootenai sophomore Katey Mae McInturff was the top local finisher at the Potlatch Invitational, finishing third in the girls race in 20 minutes and 47 seconds at Scenic 6 Park.

Olivia Kincheloe was 11th in 22:49, Shannon Riley 12th in 23:56 for Kootenai, which travels to Hells Gate State Park near Lewiston on Thursday for the 2A District 1-2 meet.

Kootenai's Ry Butler was the top local finisher in the boys race, finishing in 18:18.

Ben Whipple was 11th in 19:54, Matthew Speelman 14th in 20:10 and Jesse Whipple 16th in 20:19 for Kootenai.

Jeffrey Campo was fifth for Kellogg in 18:46 in the boys race.
