SPIRIT LAKE - Timberlake staged a nice comeback Friday night against in-district rival Lakeland, only to see Brett Webb spoil it.

After Timberlake rallied from a 21-0 deficit to tie the game late in the third quarter, Webb returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, providing the eventual winning points as Lakeland defeated Timberlake 28-21 in nonleague play Friday night at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

Lakeland (5-2) burst out to a 21-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, as Troy Carr rushed for two touchdowns and returned an interception for a third score.

Timberlake (3-4) scored once in the second quarter and twice in the third quarter to pull even. Timberlake drove to the Lakeland 10 late in the fourth quarter before turning the ball over on downs with an incomplete pass on fourth down.

"In the first 10 minutes of the game we dominated pretty good," Lakeland assistant coach Mike Bayley said. "But Timberlake did a good job of hanging in there, and I thought we relaxed a bit."

Preston Rhodes rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries for Timberlake. Dan Buck added 80 yards on 23 carries, and Quinton Reese ran for 62 yards on seven carries. The Tigers totaled all but 7 of their 283 total yards on the ground.

"They're extremely quick, and it took us time to adjust to their quickness," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said of Lakeland. "I'm just really proud of our kids, that they didn't throw in the towel, and came back and made a great game of it. We had all the momentum in the world (after tying the game at 21), then in 60 seconds they take it all away from you."

No individual stats were available for Lakeland.

Lakeland, winners of five straight games, begins 4A Inland Empire League play next Friday at Moscow, which won 45-21 at Sandpoint on Friday night in the league opener for both schools.

Timberlake travels to Priest River next Friday to decide the Intermountain League title and the top two seeds to state 3A play-in games the following week.
