triumph

LACLEDE - Sam Levora won the 3-kilometer boys race in 15 minutes and 52.78 seconds for the host Bulldogs in the Sandpoint Invitational at the Riley Creek Campground.

"Sam ran a really smart race," Sandpoint coach Matt Brass said. "His goal all season has been to get under that 15:50 mark. He's just been running consistent and smart all year."

Jake Finney was second in 16:08.96 and Kyler Little third in 16:09.25 for Lake City, which won the boys team title.

"They looked really strong," said Brass of Lake City. "The two up front (Finney and Little) - it's nice to have two runners around the 16-minute mark. They ran confident and aggressive and I was really impressed with them. They look like that could sneak in (to a trophy) at the state meet if everything goes right for them and they can stay healthy."

Leif Fredericks was fourth for Coeur d'Alene Charter in 16:46.9, which finished second.

Rachel Ward of Timberlake won the girls race in 20:00.6, followed by Mikhaela Woodward of Sandpoint in 20:12.95.

Sandpoint won the girls team title.

"I thought our girls performed really well," Brass said. "I'm really happy with how they're coming into shape. They had their goals and wanted to win their home meet and run in certain packs. And they did that today."

Brass added that when he arrived on Saturday for the meet, temperatures were at 23 degrees.

"It was pretty cold," Brass said. "It was about at freezing when the middle school races got going. Once the high school races started, it began to dry up and was a great meet. We missed Coeur d'Alene, but they competed in Yakima after that meet got pushed back a week. It was a great day. You can't ask for anything more than 60-degree weather in the first part of October."
