COEUR d'ALENE - The shooting suspect killed by police Saturday has been identified as 19-year-old Hayden resident Christian N. Buquet, who also used the name Christian Mallon.

Law enforcement investigators said Sunday that Buquet shot 29-year-old Frank James of Coeur d'Alene on Saturday morning in a Coeur d'Alene neighborhood.

The shooting of James started a 5-mile police pursuit that ended with Buquet being fatally shot by Coeur d'Alene police officers near Higgens Point after an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.

Buquet had a previous adult arrest for attempted robbery in 2011.

James was shot in the chest by Buquet, authorities said, just before 11 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of 11th Street and Lakeside Avenue.

James was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was listed as being in "unknown condition" after emergency surgery Saturday, said Kootenai County sheriff's department spokesman Maj. Ben Wolfinger in a press release.

Investigators from a critical incident investigation team continue to work on the officer-involved shooting.

Investigators still are putting all of the pieces together to learn what started the outburst of violence, Wolfinger said.

Buquet fled in a white car after shooting James, heading toward Higgens Point, east of Coeur d'Alene, driving on Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive.

After shooting James, authorities say Buquet randomly fired at other citizens in the area before being chased by police. He also fired at pursuing officers.

Near Higgens Point, Buquet lost control of the vehicle he was driving, he spun out, there was an exchange of shots fired, and then he was fatally wounded.

Investigators identified four different scenes in the city where Buquet shot at citizens.

Wolfinger asked that any witnesses to the incident call the sheriff's department at (208) 446-1300.
