NIC ROUNDUP: Balanced Card women win

| November 9, 2012 8:35 PM

* WOMEN

WILLISTON, N.D. - Sophomore guard Katie Buskey scored 13 points and shot 6 of 8 from the free-throw line as the North Idaho College women, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA, beat the host Tetons 58-46 in the Williston State tournament on Thursday.

"They're a good team and might get to nationals," NIC coach Chris Carlson said of Williston State. "We got called for 18 fouls in the first half and had all kinds of lineups in the first half, but bottom line, we did what we had to do to pull away and get the win - and that's the best part right there."

Renae Mokrzycki had 10 points and eight rebounds and Angela Woods 10 points for NIC (2-0), which faces Northwest College today at noon PST in Williston.

"We were able to extend the defense and take some time off the clock in the second half and they didn't have the time to pound the ball inside," Carlson said. "We tried to run and that helped a little, but they're a big team."

WILLISTON, N.D. - Marquel Curtis scored a game-high 20 points as the Tetons defeated the 24th-ranked Cardinals in a nonconference men's basketball game.

Trailing 67-64 with 40 seconds remaining, Jalil Adbul-Bassit missed a shot for NIC and was forced to foul.

"He had a good look and just missed it," NIC coach Jared Phay said. "It was a really down-to-the-wire game."

James Webb had 12 points off the bench for NIC (2-1), which faces Northwest College of Powell, Wyo., today in Williston.

"Williston State is a good team," Phay said. "Curtis was the second leading scorer in the nation last year and they're a lot like playing a SWAC (Scenic West Athletic Conference) team."

Williston (3-0) shot 23 of 51 from the field, compared to 22 of 56 for NIC.

"I wasn't happy with our defensive effort," Phay said. "You can't do that on the road and expect to win. We need to learn from it and bounce back tomorrow."
