Seaman wins an emotional title

MERIDIAN - Winning the state 5A title in the girls discus represents more than just a solid accomplishment for Coeur d'Alene High senior Madison Seaman. It is a bit therapeutic as well.

Seaman matched the state record of 148 feet, seven inches set in 1988 by Skyline's Lisa White in the state track and field meet at Rocky Mountain High with an epic toss on Friday that was more than 20 feet better than her qualifying throw.

"I don't know where that came from," Seaman said of her record aerial. "I scared myself when they read the tape measure. I think I was like 15 feet from the record before. That one just bombed out and I was like 'Holy cow.'"

Seaman wasn't the only state champ from the Coeur d'Alene area. Lake City senior Zack Linscott also won a state title on the first afternoon of the two-day event with a 6-4 leap in the boys high jump.

But the story of the day was Seaman's performance, which comes approximately six months after a family tragedy in which her father, Joe, took his own life.

Seaman felt inspiration during the event as if her dad was hovering above the grassy discus area located just east of the main stadium.

“My dad told me last year he was going to be here when I won so I guess he showed up — in a way,” Seaman said. “It made me want to prove myself to him a whole lot. He always wanted to see me do this.”

After her record-tying toss, it was pretty clear Seaman was going to win the event. Her winning throw ended up being 24 feet better than the top effort by second-place Brooklyn Daylong of Vallivue High.

“I was definitely stunned for sure,” Seaman said. “After that, I was like, ‘OK, let’s try to get a couple more good marks in and then we’re done for the day.’”

Seaman looks for a second state title today when she competes in the shot put. Lake City senior Kadie Blank finished third in the discus with a toss of 118-4.

Linscott finished second in the high jump in each of the two previous state meets and figured he had a solid chance to win the crown in his final go-round. His winning leap was 2 inches better than the mark of Meridian’s Kyle McLaughlin.

“Seniors got me both times,” Linscott said. “They were jumping pretty high, like 6-8, and I came in second with 6-4 jumps both times so it feels incredible to be in this spot.”

Linscott hit a stretch during the event in which he said his legs “were feeling like jello” before persevering and earning the title.

“This feels amazing,” Linscott said. “It feels better than I’ve ever felt right now.”

Junior Chandler Smith of Post Falls placed third at 6-2, and Post Falls junior Keenan Marianno tied for fourth, also at 6-2.

Coeur d’Alene senior Cody Curtis attempted to defend his state title in the boys 3,200, but came up short despite a personal-best and school-record time of 9:27.04. The time was better than last year’s winning time of 9:28.65, but Curtis finished well behind the winner as Dallin Farnsworth from Highland of Pocatello obliterated the course with a winning time of 9:14.90.

Curtis is the defending state title in the 1,600 meters, which will be run today.

“I’ll be trying for that again,” Curtis said. “It would be quite a feat because I’m sick right now.”

In the boys long jump, Coeur d’Alene junior Makenzie Baker was fourth at 21-4 1/2.

In the girls pole vault, Lake City senior Kierstie Shellman finished second with a leap of 11-6, six inches behind winner Allison Jeffries of Eagle. Lake City senior Erin Stone tied for fifth at 9-6.

In the 3,200 girls relay, Coeur d’Alene’s quartet of freshman Josie Brown, sophomore Jaycee Rade, freshman Krista Story and sophomore Madison Sumner placed third in 9:31.17. The school’s 3,200 boys relay team of Curtis, senior Jacob Stadley, junior Adam Garman and junior Mike Dunton finished sixth in 8:18.86.

Coeur d’Alene senior Morgan Struble had the fastest prelims time in the girls 300 hurdles (44.62 seconds) and second-fastest (14.59) in the 100 meter hurdles. Struble set a state record in the 300 hurdles (43.40) at last year’s state meet and finished second in the 100 hurdles.

Post Falls junior Wednesday Walton and Coeur d’Alene freshman Kaitlyn Gunnerson also qualified for both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Walton had the third-best prelims time (46.10) in the 300 hurdles.

Lake City senior Nick Gosselin had the second-best prelims time (49.97) in the 400 meters.

The five state meets conclude today, with the 4As at Middleton High, the 3As at Eagle High, the 2As at Centennial High and the 1As at Mountain View High.

Results from the 3A meet were not available.
