4A: Bulldogs

dominate

SANDPOINT - There was little doubt who owned the 4A Region 1 tennis tournament at Travers Park, as the Bulldogs claimed eight of the possible 10 berths to state in a dominating display.

Kevin Kirby and Kennedy Search each notched straight-set wins over their teammates in the singles finals, with the loser of each bouncing back to win the consolation final for a clean sweep in the singles draws.

Bulldogs coach Kent Anderson was merely a spectator, refusing to coach in the all-Sandpoint finals, and was impressed with the play of Kirby in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kane Wijngaarden.

"Kevin came through with a great game plan," said Anderson, who figured the match could go either way. "He mixed up pace and drives perfectly, and kept Kane off-balance."

Brothers Drew and Micah Buckmiller won a tightly contested match against teammates Talbot Callister and Alex Hon to win the boys doubles title, then Hon and Callister bounced back to take down Lakeland's Godwin Peck and Matthew Peck in a three-set consolation final to punch their ticket to state.

One of the biggest surprises of the day came at mixed doubles, where Sandpoint's Carson Nygren and Nicolette Jessen opened some eyes with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over a favored Moscow team in the final.

"Carson was putting it away and Nicolette was just so consistent with pinpoint accuracy," said Anderson. "They kind of just rolled through it."

All told a whopping 12 Bulldogs will be making the trip to the 4A state tournament next Friday and Saturday in Boise.

No Lakeland players advanced to state.
