BLM sponsors Migratory Bird Day event at Blue Creek Bay

| May 10, 2012 9:15 PM

The Coeur d'Alene District will host the first Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bureau of Land Management's Blue Creek Bay day use recreation site.

BLM's Blue Creek Bay hosts many different bird species in meadow, coniferous forest, open water, cottonwood forest and wetland habitats.

Plan to visit three "observation stations" stocked with telescopes, field guides and knowledgeable BLM staff.

The "Hummingbird Feeder Project" station offers kids an opportunity to make a feeder to take home. Make a special request to hear a bird song from any bird in North America at the "Bird Song DJ Station."

Participants will learn about how birds communicate and which bird songs you are most likely to hear in the area. Play a round of "Bird Bingo" and make a 3D paper bird to take home at the third station.

The first 90 children will go home with Birding Activity Journals, Bird Buddy Bracelets, stickers and book marks.

Blue Creek Bay Recreation Area is eight miles east of Coeur d'Alene. Take I-90 east to exit 22, Wolf Lodge Bay, and follow East Yellowstone Trail Road for 2.5 miles to the entrance of the BLM's Blue Creek Bay day use recreation site.
