PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene's boys capture 5A Region 1 golf championship

| May 9, 2012 9:15 PM

POST FALLS - With all four scorers in the 70s, Coeur d'Alene's boys captured the 5A Region 1 golf title Tuesday at Prairie Falls Golf Course.

Coeur d'Alene shot 294, five strokes better than Post Falls. Both teams qualified for state.

John Duffin tied for second with a 70, and Hunter Kraft was fourth with a 74 for Coeur d'Alene.

"Our depth paid off just like it had all year," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "We don't have a 63 kid, but have some that can shoot even par. That's what has carried us through the year. John has been a rock for us all year. He's been hitting it OK all year, but doesn't blow up - but that's what it takes to win at state. We've got four or five kids sitting at home that could have shot those scores - but it's a good problem to have going forward."

Post Falls sophomore Trevor Fedele shot a 7-under 63 for medalist honors and led the Trojans to a state berth.

"Oh man, he was on fire," Post Falls golf coach Matt Barkley said. "I thnk he had about 8 birdies ... he told me he wasn't putting very well - all his birdies were within 4 feet of the cup. He just had it dialed in today. He said he had a couple of putts lip out."

Tye Smith of Lake City also qualified for state, tying for second with a 70.

The top two teams and top four individuals qualified for state, Monday and Tuesday at Pinecrest Golf Course in Idaho Falls.

Lewiston won the girls regional title. Coeur d'Alene also qualified by finishing second.

Maddie Dodge, who has signed with Eastern Washington, shot 78 and was Post Falls' lone girls qualifier.

POST FALLS — Matt Hammond hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kurtis Wiltse in the 10th inning as the Trojans edged the Timberwolves in a loser-out game in the 5A Region 1 tournament.

In the seventh inning with two out and Lake City trailing 5-3, catcher Ethan Brandt hit a two-run double with two strikes to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Hammond drove in three runs for Post Falls (10-11), which travels to Lewiston on Thursday for the regional second-place game, with the winner advancing to the state tournament next week in Boise.

“I was proud of our pitchers today,” Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. “We threw a lot of strikes and didn’t allow a lot of walks. Both Dylan (Charbonneau) and Zack (Reeder) did a great job on the mound. The opportunity is there for us. If we play good baseball (on Thursday), we’ve got a shot to win.”
