Maurine Abbott, 76

After 20 years living with cancer, she is finally at rest and pain free. Maurine died at the Hospice House in Hayden on Jan. 24, 2012. Born in Hailey to Maurine and Myron Schafer on March 2, 1935.

She spent most of her childhood in Hailey and then moved to Virginia as Myron was involved with the ending of World War II. They then moved to Boise where she completed high school, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, she took a job in Yellowstone National Park for the summer meeting Bill Abbott which lead to their wedding in 1956. She spent one year at Boise Junior College followed by two years of X-ray technician training at St. Al’s Hospital in Boise. They then moved to Los Angeles to complete Bill’s education.

When Bill took a teaching position in Glendale, Calif., in 1960, she ended her work with X-ray and did several different occupations; office manager with a construction firm, sewing wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses along with setting up weddings. By far, her most satisfying work was with her teaching wearable art, wardrobe coordination, color etc. to adults in her home for 20 years.

She retired when Bill retired in 1994 and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1996. She was very active with the 3Cs group, the Mechetti Chapter of Spokane Symphony Associates, Artist Way group of ladies, the HD operas at Riverstone Theaters, gardening, entertaining in her home, was an excellent cook and loved spending time at the home they built in Ashton.

Maurine is preceded in death by her parents and leaves behind her husband, Bill; sister Karen of Australia and a sister-in-law, Joann, in southern California along with two nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835. The people of Hospice were so compassionate and helpful during her last hours with us.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, followed by a reception at the family home.
