Colbert named top player in 5A

| March 27, 2012 9:15 PM

Marcus Colbert, who helped the Post Falls Trojans to state tournament appearances in each of his four seasons as the starting point guard, has been named 5A boys Player of the Year by the Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise.

The 5-foot-11 Colbert quietly became the school's career scoring leader, finishing with 1,407 points. He won a school-record 82 games as a starter and averaged 17 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. The Trojans, who won the state title two years ago and were fourth last year, were runners-up at state this year to Borah.

"A true winner. I will miss watching him play ... other teams," Borah coach Cary Cada told the Statesman of Colbert.

Colbert, a first-team All-Idaho selection for the third straight season, has signed to play at Montana State next season.

Coeur d'Alene senior guard Deon Watson was also named to the 5A first team. Watson, who has signed to play football at Idaho, but also plans to walk on in basketball, averaged 13.5 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for the Vikings.

Coeur d'Alene junior forward Kendalyn Brainard, who averaged 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, was named to the 5A girls first team.

Timberlake had two first-team all-Idaho selections - Kelly Madsen, a senior wing who averaged 17.3 points per game at state for the runner-up Tigers, and Kara Wenstrom, a senior point guard who averaged 14.2 points per game for the season, 15.3 per game at state.

Priest River junior guard Steffie Pavey also made the 3A girls first team.

Post Falls senior wing/post Michael Hillman was named to the 5A boys second team, and Coeur d'Alene sophomore forward Sydney Williams made the 5A girls second team.

Three area players made the 3A boys second team - St. Maries senior point guard Satchel Schetzle, Kellogg senior forward Ryan McDonald and Kellogg junior guard/forward Garret Wendt.
