County to tackle school trustee selection

| March 20, 2012 9:52 AM

The process of selecting a Coeur d'Alene school trustee will be discussed Thursday by the Kootenai County commissioners.

The commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. in the county administration building's third floor boardroom, 451 N. Government Way, to discuss filling the school board vacancy in Coeur d'Alene.

The job of appointing a Coeur d'Alene School District trustee fell to the county commissioners when a district judge ruled in February that Wanda Quinn's appointment to the board last year was invalid.

Idaho code gives school boards a maximum of 120 days to fill an empty trustee seat once it has been officially declared vacant. After 120 days, it goes to the county commissioners.

The seat in question was previously held by Edie (Brooks) McLachlan and was declared vacant by the board last May. It was held by Quinn until the judge's decision last month.

The county commissioners are accepting applications from potential appointees until April 13 and have announced they will work with the four remaining school board members in making a selection.

The commissioners will meet earlier in the day, at 1 p.m., in the same location. That meeting will include a discussion about funding for a police hold facility.
