Jesse Newell, 86

Jesse Gordon Newell died March 10, 2012, at Pinewood Care Center, in Coeur d’Alene. He was born July 10, 1925, to Lawrence “Pete” and Bessie Newell in Bellcamp, Alberta, Canada. He was the youngest of four children. After his birth, the family made their home on a dairy ranch in “The Canyon” at Cataldo, Idaho. Jesse served in the Army during World War II in the Philippine Islands. After the war, he returned to Cataldo where he met and married Dorothy Cunningham (divorced). They had three children together. They made their home in Pinehurst and Kingston until 1968, when they moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Jesse was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to camp and garden. He was also an excellent carpenter and mechanic. He dearly loved dogs; his last dog was Bear.

Jesse is survived by two daughters, Shirley Johnson (husband, Ed), Post Falls; Vickie Newell (fiancé, Mike Henggeler) Coeur d’Alene; and son, Michael Newell (wife, Windy), Hayden. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He has numerous nieces and nephews.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence “Buster” Newell and Clarence Newell; and his sister, Fannie Shopbell. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Logan Michael Newell and nephew, Lonnie Newell.

No service will be held at this time, at Jesse’s request. There will be a “Celebration of Life” ceremony later this spring to scatter his ashes in the mountains he loved.
