COLUMN: Resolve needed with Iran

| March 9, 2012 8:00 PM

Sholeh Patrick’s column fits the times. Needless to say, America is never more weak than when we have no clear resolve. Israel’s resolve is clear, Iran’s resolve is clear and this week, our president ratchets up the rhetoric here by reaching back to reinvigorate the classic picture of America from Teddy Roosevelt’s “Walk softly and carry a big stick.”

Dare we draw from such a sacred text without the resolve to follow through with it. Unless there is a clear and present danger of continuing to take the time necessary to complete the project, a bomb maker keeps making the bomb. On the other hand, allowing more time in this arena, is the free world’s greatest enemy. When we doubt Iran’s resolve we do so foolishly.

Ms. Patrick says, “I fear the result of a pre-emptive punch far more than any current threat.” I believe she makes this statement based on fear rather than on good research (science). Iran has bragged to the world of their resolve, this is no idle threat — those in power in Iran will die for what they believe. In their religious fervor they are bound to end the world as we know it.

Though taken out of context, America would do well now to heed the words of Jesus (Matthew 24: 43). “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.” We are on alert for a reason — Iran will use the nuke. Then a pre-emptive punch will be too late.

This event will usher in a time unlike any other and will lead to Armageddon. Then the verse above will be in context as we place verse 42 of Matthew 24 in front of verse 43. (Vs. 42) “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
