Kootenai County has released list of candidates who have filed during the first week for a variety of county offices and precinct committee positions.

"It's still early; only half the filing timeline has passed," said county clerk Cliff Hayes. "This picture is continuing to evolve, and it will change further over the next week."

Some races aren't very active so far. Only incumbents Barry McHugh for Prosecuting Attorney and Dan Green for Commissioner District 3 have filed, and are without challengers.

Other races have several challengers, notably Commissioner District 1, with 4 challengers. For sheriff, three candidates have filed with a party affiliation, and their names will appear on the May ballot.

One independent candidate has also filed for sheriff, but under Idaho Code 34-708, his name will appear only on the November ballot. For Precinct Committeemen, 30 Republican candidates have filed, and five Democratic candidates.

County candidate declarations & petitions are available online at www.kcgov.us/elections/candidate_downloads.asp.

Candidates are encouraged to bring their paperwork to the Kootenai County Elections office, 1808 N. Third in Coeur d'Alene, in advance of Friday's deadline.
