The Service is proposing to designate 375,565 acres of critical habitat in Idaho and Washington for the caribou. These lands are all currently considered to be occupied by the species and no exclusions or exemptions are proposed. The proposed critical habitat is located in Boundary and Bonner counties in Idaho, and Pend Oreille County in Washington. On May 31, 2012, the Service released a draft analysis that estimates costs related to the conservation of the southern Selkirk Mountains woodland caribou and its proposed critical habitat. The draft economic analysis (DEA) is contracted by the Service to an independent firm. The DEA estimates federal agency administrative consultation costs in the states of Idaho and Washington. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Informed and active public participation is encouraged through information-sharing, public comment and public hearing opportunities, and is vital to the Service's final decision.
