Radford shares her smile and her caring heart

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves. - James Matthew Barrie

The United Way Volunteer Center connects members of our community with volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are vital to the well-being of our community - and that is why we are recognizing a special volunteer.

As families move in and out of transitional housing, Terri Radford offers her time and dedication.

"Terri helps out every Monday night with the children at St. Vincent de Paul while their parents are in life skills classes. She is such an amazing volunteer and woman," said Kelly Garrett, St. Vincent de Paul Volunteer Coordinator. "Without fail, she is here Monday nights after working all day at her job... still with a big bright smile on her face. Many of our children have experienced traumatic events in their lives making Terri's loving and compassionate spirit so valuable."

Child care for the life skills classes at St. Vincent de Paul has been provided through St. Luke's Episcopal Church for the past six years. "Terri has been an integral part of the main stay in the Monday night effort," said Bob Runkle, co-leader of St. Luke's Outreach Ministry. Families are typically in the program between 10 to 15 months. Change in families means change in the number and ages of the kids needing care. Terri and other volunteers adapt activities based on the age of the children as well as the weather.

For Terri, volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul is both satisfying and humbling. "It makes you really look at things differently - not as quick to judge," said Terri. When asked about volunteering, Terri said, "It's so easy to do because you are not starting a program or running a program. It is huge what an hour can do. It is nice to add strength to their established program."

Volunteer Opportunity

Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council is looking for adults to provide leadership and guidance to boys and girls by implementing the Camp Fire USA club program.

Camp Fire programs help children and youth realize their full potential as they become more skilled at planning activities, making decisions, solving problems and taking responsibility for their actions. As a result, they grow to become responsible citizens concerned about the communities in which they live.

Volunteers must attend approximately 2-3 hours of training. Trainings are available on a set schedule, but can also be scheduled at the convenience of the volunteer. Leaders will work in conjunction with at least one other adult in planning and holding regular Camp Fire club meetings, as well as maintaining accurate club records, providing a safe environment, and participating in council programs.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check. Must commit to one year of service with their club and become registered members of the council.
