Herman Hebert, 81, passed away peacefully in Coeur d’Alene.

Herman was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Thibodaux, La., to Elphege and Modess Hebert. Herman was blessed to be part of a large family, being 1 of 10 children. At the age of 19, Herman enlisted in the Army and served as a Staff Sergeant for three years in Japan. Herman married Dorothy Gazda on March 21, 1953, and they lived in Chicago (10 years), Louisiana (four years), and California (eight years). In 1974, Herman, Dorothy and their two daughters moved to their homestead of 52 acres in Sagle.

Herman enjoyed the ranch where they raised cattle, rabbits, sheep, goat and a pig. Herman learned through the School of Hard Knocks to be an excellent Tool and Die maker. He worked many years at Columbia Lighting in Spokane where he later retired. Together in 1989, Herman and Dorothy developed “The Silver Lady” jewelry business in Sandpoint. Herman dearly loved being with his family. He enjoyed watching western movies, taking drives while admiring beautiful homes, picnicking, drive-in movies, waterskiing, fly-fishing, shrimp trawling, hunting, camping, traveling to 51 states and dancing with his wife. He took his wife to their last dance on New Year’s Eve December 2011 at the Eagles Lodge in Coeur d’Alene where they spent the evening with family and good friends.

In 2003, Herman and Dorothy took a long road trip in their motor home making their final stop in Herman’s hometown of Thibodaux, La., where Herman had a major stroke. With all the love and support from his family and the therapy he received, he physically recovered very well. Unfortunately, it was the onset of Herman’s Dementia. In 2010, Herman and Dorothy moved to Fairwinds Retirement Community and in March 2012, Herman moved to Wellspring Meadows, an Alzheimer’s facility. He passed away there, into a pain-free life and a beautiful kingdom.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; two daughters Wendy Jones and Dorothy “Dorrie” Freitas; five grandchildren, Kenny (Jeanette) Jones, Kyle Jones, Kody Jones, Aundrea Freitas and Alyssa Freitas; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Issabell Jones; one sister, Rita (Guy) Clement; three brothers, Raymond (Margaret) Hebert, Gerald “Jay” (Theresa) Hebert and Larry (Phyllis) Hebert.
