SCHOOLS: Thoughts behind nomination

| July 13, 2012 9:00 PM

There are five trustees. The board is obligated to vote on the chair position and others each July. Mr. Fredrickson has been board member, board vice chair and chairman.

My intent, as I stated prior to the nomination of Tom Hamilton from vice chair to the chair position, was to suggest what I feel is a fair and proper rotation of the chair positions among the sitting members of the board. Board member to vice chair…vice chair to chair.

I think that facilitates a healthy board and that is good for the board and the community which it serves.

It had nothing whatsoever to do with “a vote of no confidence” with regard to Mr. Fredrickson. His contributions as a trustee cannot be questioned.

It has nothing to do with the chair person “setting the agenda” as any trustee can request any item to put on any meeting’s agenda.

It is unfortunate that he or any board member that resigns in such a way is in effect politicizing the board. The board is a non-political entity.

It is a group of citizens volunteering to participate in their community and work toward improving the educational process and to provide oversight on district policy and finances.

I was disappointed at Mr. Fredrickson’s departure.
