Heritage ready to soar over Cd'A

| July 7, 2012 11:00 PM

Aviation enthusiasts, mark your calendars. It’s time for a fly-in.

“Heritage Wings” Over Coeur d’Alene will take place August 17-18 at Pappy Boyington Field.

Presented by the Coeur d’Alene Airport Association, Marine Corps League, Pappy Boyington Detachment No. 966 and the Coeur d’Alene Wooden Boat Show, “Heritage Wings” is open to the public and features several free events.

The festivities begin Friday night with a free show and dance. A tribute to the USO tours of the second world war, it takes place in a hangar with a pair of warbirds in the background — a World War II Commemorative Air Force B-17 and B-25.

The big birds are flying in for the event, and will be on display on the ground and available for rides from August 13-20.

The cost to go up in the B-17 is $425 per person. It’s $395 per person for a ride in the B-25. Tours of the grounded planes will also be available, for $5-10.

Free airport tours will be given by airport personnel on Saturday, with a chance to see several aircraft and a hydroplane being built.

The Sport Air Racing League’s Pappy Boyington Memorial Cup takes off Saturday morning.

Motorcycles, vintage vehicles; model planes, cars and boats; working scale model aircraft engines, cars and steam engines; and military aircraft will be on display throughout the day.

Special guests, including Burt Rutan and George Follmer, will be on hand.

In addition to the free offerings, dinner is available Friday night for a $12 donation, and pancakes will be served Saturday morning for a $7 donation. Helicopter rides will be offered for $25 all day Saturday. Vendors will be offering food and other wares. From August 13-20, rides will be available in one of two World War II Commemorative Air Force warbirds, a B-17 and B-25. For warbird ride prices and information, call 208-699-5449.

Free transportation will be offered to and from the Coeur d’Alene Wooden Boat Show taking place in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Proceeds from a silent auction and donations received during the fly-in will benefit Wounded Warriers, Toys for Tots and Honor Flight.
