REQUEST FOR COMMENTS COMMENT PERIOD EXTENSION UPPER LOCHSA LAND EXCHANGE Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forest The Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) for the proposed Upper Lochsa Land Exchange is available for public review and comment. The SDEIS is available online at http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/project_content.php?project=26227 and is available for review at local Forest Service offices and local libraries. The USDA Forest Service proposes to exchange National Forest System land located on the Nez Perce ? Clearwater and Idaho Panhandle National Forests for approximately 39,371 acres of Western Pacific Timber, LLC (WPT) land all located in northern Idaho. The WPT lands are checkerboard lands located near the Idaho/Montana border intermingled with the Clearwater National Forest near Powell, Idaho. The purpose of this proposed project is to consolidate land ownership in the Upper Lochsa River drainage to provide more efficient and effective natural resource management. This purpose can be achieved by exchanging parcels of National Forest for WPT lands or purchasing land from WPT. A Draft EIS that analyzed five alternatives for exchange was issued for public review and comment on November 22, 2010. In response to comments received on the Draft EIS the Forest Service has analyzed an additional alternative (Alternative F) in the Supplemental DEIS. Alternative F identifies 45,043 acres of National Forest land within Idaho County for potential exchange. The federal lands consists of parcels located on the Nez Perce National Forest and are generally described as three tracts of land located to the east and to the south of Grangeville, Idaho and two tracts of land located to the northwest of Riggins, Idaho. These five tracts of land are relatively large, ranging from 3,200 acres to nearly 20,000 acres. The comment deadline was originally scheduled for January 17, 2012 but has been extended by an Amended Notice published in the Federal Register on January 13, 2012. Therefore, to ensure the consideration of your comments they must be postmarked or received on or before February15, 2012. In order to retain administrative appeal rights you must provide timely written, oral or electronic comments during this comment period.
