Seeking a dog who can ham it up

COEUR d'ALENE - Think your dog might be the next Lassie, Benji, Balto, Old Yeller or even Cujo? Then Christian Youth Theater-North Idaho wants you - and your dog, of course.

It won't have to save a life, haul medical supplies through a storm or snarl at the camera. But it will need to be smart and kid-friendly.

"If your dog has ever wanted to be a star, this is their chance to shine and for you to be the proud owner," wrote executive director Bliss Lanier.

The nonprofit is holding auditions from 1:15-2 p.m. Saturday for the role of Sandy in its upcoming production of "Annie."

CYT-North Idaho had 120 students audition for "Annie" last weekend and 90 were cast.

Still needed, said Lanier, is Sandy, Annie's dog found on the streets of NYC in act one.

Annie's best friend may be a mutt, but she plays a key role in the story of the little orphan.

"Its very important to the show," Lanier said. "Sandy is a big part people remember."

So what's she looking for in the next Sandy?

A medium-sized mutt would be good. The dog should be friendly and not afraid of noise or kids' hugs because it will be surrounded by kids before, during and after the show. It will have to perform in 12 shows, so patience would be good, too.

Lanier has seen many types of dogs fill the role, and all are welcome to try out.

"The dogs are always different," she said.

"Annie" could be done without a dog, Lanier said, but the audience, especially children, would likely notice and be disappointed.

"The kids love to see a dog in a show," she said.

There is also a role for a second canine, though it won't get the same spotlight as Sandy.

This one needs to be a small dog that can easily be carried on and off the stage.

"It's the little dog that doesn't get away from the dog catcher," Lanier said.

Those interested, should bring their dogs on a leash to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 E. Pennsylvania St.

There will be an audition form to be filled out by the owner and the dog will work briefly with the director of the show, Annie, and three other cast members who will also be working with the dog during the show.

The dog will be required to be at the Kroc Center for all 12 performances, Feb. 24 to March 4, and dress rehearsal week, Feb. 20-23. It will need to be there about a half-hour before each show.

There is no pay for the chosen dog, but there will be "a higher place" for it in doggie heaven, Lanier added.
