Post Falls second at state
POCATELLO - Post Falls High had a lot be proud of, and a little to be bummed about on Saturday.
The Trojans put eight wrestlers in the finals at the state 5A tournament at Holt Arena, and four of them won a state title.
Post Falls was gunning for its first state title in school history, but came up a little short, totaling 276.5 points to 289.5 for champion Lewiston. Still, it was the program's highest finish in school history.
"We have mixed feelings," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "We wanted to bring home a championship, but we're also really excited that a lot of kids wrestled really well."
Toward that end, Post Falls senior James Ost (145 pounds) won his third state title in as many seasons, and teammate Tyler Booth (152) won his second state title. Senior Nathan McLeod (182) and freshman Drake Foster (106) also won state titles for the Trojans.
"We went 12-1 in the quarterfinals, put 12 in the semifinals, eight in the finals and had four champs," Reardon said. "It's tough to be disappointed."
Reardon said Lewiston's edge came in part from having 15 placers to Post Falls' 12.
"Honestly, it's just a couple matches here and there," Reardon said.
Also in 5A, Coeur d'Alene senior Garrett DeMers won a state title at 195.
In 3A, Blaine Invernon of Bonners Ferry won a state title at 132.
5A: Before this season, only 19 5A wrestlers in Idaho history had won three straight state titles.
Add Ost to the list, after his 3-2 victory over Post Falls teammate Seth McLeod, a freshman, in the finals.
“It was a little different,” Ost said of wrestling a teammate in the finals. “But I’m glad we both made it to the finals.”
Booth suffered a high ankle sprain prior to the regional tournament, then injury defaulted in the regional title match after he had secured a state berth.
“He fought through the pain,” Reardon said.
Booth beat Nate Partenfelder of Lake City 3-0 in the title match — his fourth victory in five meetings this year against the Timberwolf.
“It was cool to see everybody else win too,” Booth said.
“He had a great year and a great tournament,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said of Partenfelder. “He just ran into a real tough kid in the finals.”
Nathan McLeod bounced around at different weights this year, finally settling in at 182 for the postseason — even though he said he only weighs around 165.
“I had to change up my technique a little bit, but it worked out nicely,” McLeod said.
McLeod also beat a teammate, junior Cody Johnson, in the finals, 4-0.
“It was really difficult because he knew my arsenal of moves,” McLeod said. “I had to wrestle him defensively.”
Foster beat Drake Randall of Lewiston 9-6 in the finals, avenging a loss to him in last week’s regional title match when he admittedly was nervous.
“After that, we went back to the drawing board,” Foster said. “Coach Reardon told me about Dan Gable, that the only match he lost was because of nerves. This tournament was all about calming down.”
DeMers, inspired by a group of some 20 friends and relatives in the stands, beat Jon Fisher of Centennial 3-0 in the finals.
“I was just patient, and I bided my time — eventually he made a mistake and I capitalized,” said DeMers, who set a school record with 30 pins this season. “I’ve won Tri-State, but nothing compares to state.”
“He was pretty dominant all year,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said.
Post Falls’ other placers were Lucas Bolster (third at 98), Chadd Webster (third at 132), Mitch Crain (fourth at 120) and Tanner Riekena (sixth at 138).
Other placers for Coeur d’Alene included Hudson Staub (third at 138), Matt James (fifth at 220), Drew Gorringe (sixth at 106) and A.J. Konda (sixth at 113).
Other placers for Lake City were Nick Wells (fifth at 132) and Jared Lambert (sixth at 145).
4A: Peyton Dillon of Sandpoint was third at 120, and teammate Matt Lockey was fourth at 220. Bulldog Justin Pepperdine was fifth at 182, and Adam Weindl was sixth at 170.
For Lakeland, Jesse Putman was fourth at 152, and Brandon Yount was sixth at 138.
Kuna won the team title with 281.5 points. Columbia of Nampa was second with 222. Sandpoint was 11th, Lakeland 14th.
3A: Invernon beat Stetson Holman of Sugar-Salem by technical fall 20-5 in the finals.
Timberlake had two second-place finishers in Kody Hongslo (120) and Forrest Herring (160).
Other locals finishing second were Erik Martin (113) of St. Maries and Cole Jerome (138) of Kellogg.
Timberlake just missed bringing home a trophy, finishing fifth with 125 points. Weiser won with 185, and Sugar-Salem was second with 172.5. Kellogg was eighth, Bonners Ferry 10th.
Third-place finishers included Blake Ivie of Kellogg (113), Tyler Popkin of Priest River (126), Chris Vergobbi of Kellogg (132) and Alan Foote of Timberlake (285). Placing fourth was Drew Hill of Timberlake (126), Dallas Hopkins of Priest River (138) and Brian Fink of Priest River (170).
Placing fifth was Scott Larson of Timberlake (113) and Tristen O’Brien of Kellogg (120). Placing sixth was Dailyn Johnson of Timberlake (98), Bryson Vergobbi of Kellogg (106), David Chapman of Bonners Ferry (126), Zack Wilson of Bonners Ferry (145), Joe Bloomsburg of St. Maries (152), Ashton Stephenson of St. Mareis (160) and Zach Heigel of Bonners Ferry (170).
2A: Kidman Cook of Wallace took fifth at 145, and teammate Curtis Dolson was sixth at 220.
Declo won the team title with 221 points. North Fremont was second with 170. Wallace finished 17th.
