Update: Possible missing child report unfounded

| February 24, 2012 7:04 AM

Cd'A PD is asking for the public's help in ruling out suspicious activity.

The CDA Police Department has determined this morning's report of suspicious activity involving a possible missing child appears to be unfounded.

By questioning neighbors in the area where a boy was seen getting into a van and leaving his bicycle behind, police advise it appears the bike did not belong to the child.

Neighbors in the vicinity told officers they saw the bike lying on a lawn this morning at 7:30 a.m. The child was seen getting into the van at 8:15 a.m.

With no missing children reported, CDA Police report  it appears the child got into the van willingly, likely with a parent or guardian.

The department will continue to monitor the situation.

The Press just received an update from the CDA Police Department saying no child has been reported missing in the area. Here's the story that was posted earlier today:

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department reports a call came in at 8:15 this morning from a 25-year old woman who stated she was in the area of Hanley Avenue and Courcelles Parkway. She said while driving her child to school she saw a white van drive up to a little boy who was riding a mountain bike.

The caller told police she observed the child get off his bike and willingly get into the van.

The child left the bike on the side of the road. This seemed suspicious, so she called police.

The woman described the vehicle as a full-size cargo van with ladder racks, a possible Idaho license plate and very dirty on the outside. The driver was a male. She was not able to provide any further description than that. She did not obtain a license plate for the vehicle.

Police are currently working with Coeur d’Alene School District personnel to determine if any children failed to arrive at school this morning.

The child is described as 8 or 9 years old, dark hair, 49-inches tall, wearing blue jeans, a yellow, green, and black neoprene jacket and dark shoes. His bicycle is described as a full size mountain bike. Police have taken possession of it. It is a green and black Huffy/Alpine 18-speed with a black and green seat, black pedals, and front suspension.

The police department is asking the public to help them identify the child and the owner of the van to make sure the child is not in harm’s way. It is possible a parent picked the child up and this incident is innocent in nature.

If anyone has any information on this child, they are asked to contact the police department immediately, (208)769-2320.

Police will continue to monitor the situation and would like anyone who recognizes the bicycle pictured to call the department.
