Community Canopy workshops offered March 9

| February 20, 2012 8:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Two workshops for people interested in landscape care will be offered Friday, March 9. The topics will include "Pests and Pesticides" and "Caring for Young Trees." They will be held at the Community Room of the Coeur d'Alene Library.

Not all tree problems are caused by insects and diseases. Scott Nielsen, Washington State Department of Agriculture, will start off the morning session with information regarding recognizing herbicide injury in trees. Scott is also well-versed in pesticides and the rules and regulations for their use, and will provide a question-and-answer period. Neal Kittelson, Idaho Department of Lands Forest Health Program, will cover the detection, prevention and suppression of some of the most problematic pests in our area - the balsam woolly adelgid, the spruce terminal weevil, the poplar and willow borer, and poplar scale. He will also address emerging pests, such as the emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, sirex woodwasp, and Asian long-horned beetle.

The afternoon workshop is great for anyone who is trying to establish young trees in the landscape so that they will thrive. However, the concepts apply to any tree, no matter the age. Garth Davis, Forestry Program Manager for the Spokane County Conservation District, and Tim Kohlhauff, Horticulture Coordinator for the Spokane County Extension, will address the protection of trees from damage by turf equipment. They will also cover the topics of mulching, providing adequate water, fertilizing, root pruning, and root collar excavation.

The workshops are sponsored by Community Canopy, a tree care partnership of the cities of Post Falls, Hayden, Coeur d'Alene, Spokane, and the Spokane County Conservation District. A $10 registration fee per person, per workshop, will cover handout materials and snacks. There is limited space, so pre-registration should be submitted by Wednesday, March 7. More information about the workshop and a registration form can be found at www.communitycanopy.org or call Katie at 415-0415.
