Luna counters Obama's high school drop out plan

A guest opinion by Idaho public schools chief Tom Luna appeared in today's edition of USA TODAY.

Luna criticizes President Barack Obama's recent proposal to legally require high school students to remain in school until the age of 18.

Luna writes:

"Just compelling students to stay in school until they are 18 is not the answer. We must have an education system where students want to stay in school.

To accomplish this, every state must reform its schools to better meet the needs of all students. This means raising rigor, engaging students, showing them relevance, and individualizing instruction so every student can succeed.

The fact is that studies show the majority of students drop out not because they aren't capable but because they are bored, unmotivated, or don't see the connection between school and their future employment."
