It is estimated that half of American adults have at least one of the leading risk factors for heart disease: Smoking, hypertension or uncontrolled high cholesterol. By reducing these risks significantly, most of the two million heart attacks (and 800,000 of the resultant deaths) that occur in this country annually could be prevented.

With this in mind, the government has launched a national Million Hearts initiative with the goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years. Included in this effort is an attempt to educate and treat half of the adults with high cholesterol who do not get treatment. The first step involves a cholesterol test, followed by cholesterol-lowering medication if needed.
