No. 2 'Jacks trip No. 1 Kellogg

ST. MARIES - Satchel Schetzle scored a team-high 15 points as the second-ranked (3A) St. Maries Lumberjacks beat the top-ranked Kellogg Wildcats 64-56 in an Intermountain League game Saturday.

"We had some balanced scoring and got some crucial stops in the fourth quarter," St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said. "It was a good hard-fought game."

The game also was the annual "Brawl for the Ball" spirit matchup between the two schools, with the Lumberjacks winning the overall spirit competition for the second straight year.

Ryan McDonald scored 19 points for Kellogg (13-3, 2-3 IML), which hosts Priest River on Wednesday.

Warren Joiner had 13 points and nine rebounds for St. Maries (12-3, 5-1), which travels to the Lake City JV on Monday.

SANDPOINT - The 1-2 punch of Derek Pennington and Lane Brooks, who combined for 35 points, helped Moscow control the second half of a 4A Inland Empire League win over Sandpoint at Les Rogers Court.

Jackson Olin poured in 20 points to lead the Bulldogs (7-12, 1-3 4A IEL), who went into the locker room tied at 22 before the Bears (8-9, 4-0) found their offensive rhythm in a 42-point second half.

Sandpoint coach Tyler Haynes said Brooks, who had 13 points and five assists, was the difference in the second half.

"We beat them (Moscow) on the boards, and they're huge compared to us," Haynes said. "We've played five really good games in a row. We've found five guys that really want to go out and set the pace."

Adam Couch scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, Tyler Howk scored 10 and Sam Nitcy and Ryan Schwartz each dished out three assists for Sandpoint, which hosts Lake City on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE - J.D. Page scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers past the Spartans in an Intermountain League game.

"It was a good battle all the way through," Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "Page stepped up and hit some big shots in the fourth. It was even the entire way and both teams played really good defense. It shows how tough our league is right now. Our district tournament is going to be really tough."

Mason Cramer had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Timberlake (12-5, 4-2 IML), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Wednesday.

Dalton Sommer scored 13 points for Priest River (6-10, 1-3), which travels to Kellogg on Wednesday.

CLARK FORK - Junior shooting guard Zack Klein poured in 24 points, including four 3-pointers, but a cold start proved too much to overcome as the Wampus Cats fell in nonleague play.

Stillman Berkley added 11 points for the Wampus Cats (3-10), who were doubled up in the first quarter and then outscored the Montana team in the final three frames.

"We need to come out a little faster," Clark Fork coach Corey Vogel said. "All of Zack's 3-pointers were within our offense. I'm proud of the boys - we fought hard."

Tristin Bristol added seven points and 10 rebounds, and Zach Nesbitt dished out five assists for the Cats.

Clark Fork hosts Kootenai on Tuesday.
