SPENDING: No such thing as free money

| February 3, 2012 8:00 PM

Kootenai County has been applying for and winning a lot of grants. At first blush, this looks like a good thing because then the taxpayers of Kootenai County don't have to foot the bill for needed expenses. When a person looks at the things our commissioners have requested grants to build however, believing they are needed is lunacy.

Do we really need a shed to park the snow groomer in out at the airport? We paid only part of the cost, but the part of the cost that came from the federal government is something our grandchildren will be paying for. Think about it. Some local government in Orlando is spending our grandchildren's debt with all this free money from Obama, and we are spending their future debt with our "free money." This reminds me of the polls that show that voters think that Congress is doing a terrible job, but those same voters think their Congressman is doing a great job.

There is no such thing as free money, and our commissioners need to get off the gravy train of federal handouts. This spending spree they are enjoying is contributing to the national debt, and the things they are applying for in many cases aren't even actually needed enough to justify our portion of the cost, to say nothing of the portion our grandchildren will pay.
