PREP ROUNDUP: Roletto lifts Viks past Lewiston

LEWISTON - Joe Roletto scored all 12 of his points in the second half as Coeur d'Alene, ranked second in 5A, outscored Lewiston 35-18 in the second half to pull away for a 58-37 victory in 5A Inland Empire League boys basketball Thursday night at Booth Hall.

"We just executed and shot the ball better in the second half," Coeur d'Alene assistant coach Steve Bourgard said. "We just made too many mistakes in the first half."

Deon Watson added 14 points, Jared Moore 10 for Coeur d'Alene (13-4, 4-1 5A IEL), which can clinch the top seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament starting Feb. 17 with a victory Wednesday at Post Falls (16-2, 3-2). A loss to the Trojans could cause a three-way tie for first place between Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Lake City (9-7, 3-2).

Randon Fuentes scored 10 points for Lewiston (7-11, 0-5), which hosts Lake City in a makeup game Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Seth Anderson had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Trojans, ranked third in 5A, past the Bulldogs in a nonleague game at The Arena.

“I thought our execution in the third quarter was a lot better,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We played a sloppy game for three quarters and I was disappointed with our guys’ execution. This wasn’t our best game of the season by far.”

Michael Hillman had 11 points and eight rebounds for Post Falls (16-2), which hosts Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday.

Ryan Schwartz scored 11 points for Sandpoint (7-11), which hosts Moscow on Saturday.

HARRISON FLATS — Bryan Smith scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half — 11 of those in the second quarter — to lead the visiting 2A Panthers past the 1A Division II Warriors in nonleague play.

R.J. Hallett added 10 points for Coeur d’Alene Charter (10-7), which plays host to Wallace next Wednesday.

“They were aggressive defensively and flying all over the place creating turnovers,” interim Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. Napierala, the athletic director and formerly the Kootenai girls basketball coach, is replacing Andrew Whipple, who resigned Monday for an undisclosed reason, Napierala said. Whipple was in his fifth season as head coach.

Graydon Myhre scored eight points for Kootenai (4-10), which travels to Mullan tonight.

PLUMMER — Jordan Brown scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Lakeside rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Troy in nonleague play.

“We were not focused at all in the first half,” Lakeside coach Bill Brebner said. “In the second half everyone stepped up with an outstanding defensive effort and we absolutely shut them down.”

Joseph Chapman added 12 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists for Lakeside (11-6), which plays at Clark Fork on Wednesday.

Vikings defeat Badgers, Bulldogs

COEUR d’ALENE — Garrett DeMers (195 pounds) won both his matches by pin as the host Vikings beat the Bonners Ferry Badgers 69-9 and Sandpoint Bulldogs 49-31 in nonleague wrestling duals.

Coeur d’Alene won eight matches via pin against Bonners Ferry.

“I think we just got on a roll and got a lot of wins,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We came out aggressive and did a lot of good things.”

Vince Marmon (145), Hudson Staub (138), Shawn White (152) and Matt James (220) also had pins against Sandpoint for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Lewiston next Thursday.

“We didn’t wrestle great, but they’re much improved,” said Moffat of Sandpoint. “After last night, to have an emotional match against Lake City, we wrestled all right. I was just happy to get through it without any injuries. We’re headed in the right direction.”

Josh Allen (160) and Adam Weindl (170) had pins for Sandpoint against Coeur d’Alene.
