Will a common drug lower Parkinson's risk?

| February 1, 2012 8:15 PM

Parkinson's disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that causes noticeable shaking and slowing of movement. While there is no cure, the condition may be managed with drugs such as levodopa, dopamine agonists, MAO B inhibitors, and others.

Recently, there has also been a promising finding that reinforces previous research showing that ibuprofen use may reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease. Protective effects were noticed after regular use (two or more times per week). However, no one is yet suggesting that anyone begin taking ibuprofen to ward off the disorder. Taking too much ibuprofen comes with its own risks, such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage and bleeding. At the same time, the finding does raise hopes of future effective treatment options.
