Tapering off anti-depressant medication

| December 26, 2012 8:00 PM

If you are being prescribed the antidepressant drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), you may feel that, for one reason or another, the time has come to stop taking the medications.

If so, it is important that you discuss your intentions with your prescribing doctor. While SSRIs are not addictive, abrupt cessation of their use can lead to withdrawal-like symptoms such as anxiety, nausea, headache, dizziness and drowsiness, which can greatly vary in severity from one person to another. Slowly tapering off these medications greatly reduces the risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Because some SSRIs remain in the body longer than others, there may also be differences in the way that discontinued use poses problems.
