TAXES: A little paper justified

| December 7, 2012 8:00 PM

I just read the article in The Press on putting more information on tax bills. This year my tax went up 78 percent compared to last year. I compared this year’s bill and last year’s. Still confused on how this happened I called the Kootenai County Treasurer to find out why.

It appears that last year I had a homeowner’s exemption from the previous owner and I had not filed a homeowner’s exemption with the county so my taxes were calculated without it. Figuring that I could file now since it is still before year end and get a refund for my overpayment I was informed that I was not able to get a refund. If I filed now my exemption would be effective for 2014 taxes.

So having read that Tom Malzahn feels the cost of paper to print more information on our bills is a concern I propose taking the extra money you collected from me and buying paper. It should cover about 17,500 sheets at Costco prices. There must be at least some other people in the same situation as I, so, you could use that money to cover the other 70,540 sheets needed to provide more information.
