Trojans rally, but lose to Eagles in season opener

| August 31, 2012 9:00 PM

POST FALLS - Mason Lickfold caught a 20-yard pass from Joey Pfennings to cut the deficit to 21-17, but the Post Falls Trojans were unable to get any closer as they fell to the Graham-Kapowsin (Wash.) Eagles 27-17 in the nonleague opener for both at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night.

"I thought we played well at times," Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz said. "And we played some great football at times, but we're pretty young and inexperienced right now. We just need to keep working hard to get better."

Post Falls opened the scoring on a 20-yard field goal by Timmy Mueller to take a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. After Graham-Kapowsin scored to take a 14-3 lead, Trojan senior Bret Davide returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-10 at halftime.

"We ran that outside wedge and Bret hit that wall hard," Hinz said. "He just found a seam and hit it as fast as he could and there wasn't anyone there."

"At times, Joey threw the ball really well," Hinz said. "Other times, he struggled a little bit. We had some drops tonight and some overthrows, but we need some improvement in the running and passing game."

Post Falls will travel to Sandpoint next Friday.
