The most important item for students
As students head back to school this September, I encourage parents to visit their library and make sure their children and teens sign up for the most important school supply of all - a library card.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when libraries across the country remind parents and caregivers that a library card is the smartest card you can own. Best of all, library cards are budget-friendly because they are free.
When it comes to achieving academic success, a library card provides students with access to a world of both print and electronic resources. Students can access free databases, online homework help and attend programs that provide an added value to the educational experience. No wonder that 84 percent of Americans agree that the public library is important to education.
Today's students learn differently than their predecessors. Studies indicate that students learn best when they are allowed to follow their personal interest. Libraries and librarians are on the frontlines of engaging these students, making a library card an essential tool for inspiring a passion for learning.
The Community Library Network, with locations in Athol, Harrison, Hayden, Pinehurst, Post Falls, Rathdrum and Spirit Lake, welcomes students of all ages to explore the world of knowledge. And we bring the library to students too through our Bookmobile services. Visit us online and find research databases for the very young through college-aged students. Or explore the many e-books we have for juvenile readers through adults.
Don't forget that younger siblings are often disappointed they cannot attend school like their brothers or sisters. Our libraries provide the perfect programs to prepare early learners from birth through kindergarten with educational playgroups and reading-readiness activities. Arts, crafts and science after-school session are available for grade schoolers and our teen programs emphasize fun and creativity. These programs are free too. What better place is there to explore and develop new interests and skills than at the library?
This September, open the door to a world of possibilities for the student in your life and sign up for a library card today.
