PREP ROUNDUP: Lewiston holds off Post Falls in 5A IEL opener

POST FALLS - Post Falls' Sydney Wiggins had 12 kills and Brenna Meehan had 31 assists, but the Lewiston Bengals defeated the Trojans 24-26, 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools at The Arena on Tuesday night.

"I thought Lewiston was a very scrappy team and had good ball control," Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. "We just had too many errors tonight. Brenna and Dani had a good night of playing and connecting on offense."

Danielle Failor had five blocks and Meehan three aces for Post Falls (1-1), which hosts a tri-match against Sandpoint and Gonzaga Prep on Wednesday.

Lake City d. Sandpoint

SANDPOINT - Kylie Curtis had 18 kills, 13 assists and nine digs as the Timberwolves beat the Bulldogs 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-12 in their nonleague opener at Les Rogers Court.

"It was a good start for us," Lake City assistant coach Laura Tolzmann said. "We came out and battled through all five games. It was really a great start for us."

Natalie Taylor had nine digs, Haile Watson eight blocks and Kaity Widmyer four aces for Lake City, which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

Hawks swept at home

RATHDRUM - Lakeland fell to Moscow 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 and was defeated by Kellogg 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.

Lakeland's Kelly Ramus had five kills, Kendra Rebal 10 assists against Moscow. Kaidan Kelsey and Kayla Fahlenkamp added four kills and three assists apiece.

In the loss to Kellogg, Lakeland's Hailey Rotchford had eight kills and six digs. Jennifer Thomas added nine assists and five aces.

Lakeland (0-3) plays Tuesday at Lake City.

SANDPOINT - Sandpoint senior Anthony Fox blasted in his fourth goal in the past three games, leading the Bulldogs past the Vikings in a nonleague game at Centennial Field.

"Fox continues to light it up," Sandpoint coach Adam Tajan said. "You expect your seniors to catch fire, and he's doing that right now."

Raleigh Hanson gave the Bulldogs (3-2) an early lead in the 14th minute, and Aaron Crossingham added some insurance with a penalty kick.

Keegan Shillington stopped five shots for Coeur d'Alene (3-1).

Sandpoint hosts Stillwater Christian on Saturday, while the Vikings travel to Post Falls on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM - Rikki McCaw had two goals and Vinny Cavalin added two assists and a goal as the Timberwolves beat the Hawks in a nonleague match at Rotary Field.

"I thought we played really well," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "Lakeland's a good squad and are kind of limited with injury, but gave us a good fight. We had a ton of opportunities, but our guys battled and stayed patient."

Joe Brisendine scored in the 56th minute for Lakeland (1-3), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

Lake City (2-1) travels to Sandpoint on Wednesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - The visiting Bulldogs scored the first two goals and were able to hang on late to defeat the Vikings in a nonleague game.

Brittany Tackett scored in the 63rd minute for Coeur d'Alene (1-2), which hosts Mead on Wednesday.

"We improved on some aspects of our game," Coeur d'Alene coach Tarragh Carr said. "But there's work still to be done."

Meghan Pagano scored in the 57th minute for Sandpoint (2-0-2), which travels to University High in Spokane today.

BONNERS FERRY - Liz Racer scored an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute as the Badgers defeated the Panthers in an Intermountain League match.

"Bonners Ferry has a great team and earned the result," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach David Baxter said. "Our kids challenged them the entire game. If we can keep learning and improve, we're going to get some positive results."

Jackie Jensen had nine saves for Coeur d'Alene Charter (1-3, 1-1 IML), which travels to the Lake City junior varsity on Tuesday.

Reoch, Ward win at invitational

PRIEST RIVER - Luke Reoch (16 minutes, 18 seconds) won the boys race for Bonners Ferry, which beat Timberlake by a single point on a sixth-runner tiebreaker at the Ivan Benson Invitational.

Ryan Richardson (16:37) and Sam St. Mars (17:01) finished second and third, respectively for Timberlake, which also had runners place sixth, seventh, 10th and 12th.

Rachel Ward (19:32) ran away with the girls race for the first-place Tigers. Natalie Herring (21:28) finished third for Timberlake, which competes at the Silverwood Coaster Cross next Saturday in Athol.

Whipple finishes 10th for Kootenai in Troy

TROY - Kootenai's Jesse Whipple finished in 10th place in 20 minutes, 13 seconds to lead the Warriors at the Troy Invitational.

Kootenai travels to the Kellogg Invitational on Thursday at Pinehurst Golf Course.
