Luck, Griffin impress as 'Skins top Colts

| August 26, 2012 9:00 PM

Andrew Luck stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, then put a deep ball down the left side into the arms of fellow rookie T.Y. Hilton for a 31-yard touchdown, wrapping up an 80-yard drive.

Robert Griffin III took a high-and-wide shotgun snap and drifted to the right to find Santana Moss for a 4-yard score, also at the end of an 80-yard drive.

Call it a draw between the top two picks in the draft. No interceptions. No fumbles. No what-was-he-thinking moments. Just a display of poise and promise Saturday at Landover, Md., as Griffin's Redskins (2-1) defeated Luck's Colts (1-2) 30-17 in one of the most anticipated games of the preseason.

No. 1 pick Luck completed 14 of 23 passes for 151 yards and the touchdown to third-round selection Hilton. No. 2 Griffin went 11 for 17 for 74 yards and the scoring throw to veteran Moss. Both quarterbacks played one series into the third quarter in the teams' dress rehearsal for the regular season, with the Redskins ahead 14-7 when the subs took over.

Steelers 38, Bills 7: At Orchard Park, N.Y., Ben Roethlisberger finished 17 of 24 for 169 yards passing, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown to cap a 98-yard drive in the final seconds of the first half to lead Pittsburgh (2-1) past Buffalo (0-3).

Raiders 31, Lions 20: Matthew Stafford threw for 68 yards until leaving with an injury to his non-throwing hand in Detroit's (1-2) loss at Oakland (1-2).

Defensive end Dave Tollefson drove Stafford to the ground after an incomplete pass in the second quarter. Team trainers wrapped Stafford's left hand in heavy bandages and a brace on the sideline. Shaun Hill took over on Detroit's next possession.

Saints 34, Texans 27: Matt Schaub and Drew Brees looked sharp in a high-scoring first half, and Joe Morgan's touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter lifted New Orleans (2-2) past visiting Houston (2-1).

Cowboys 20, Rams 19: Tony Romo didn't need much time or his top three pass-catchers to show he's ready for the regular season.

Playing only a quarter in what was supposed to be his most extensive action of the preseason, Romo threw for 198 yards with two long touchdowns to Dwayne Harris, who got behind defenders and went through them to score in Dallas' (2-1) victory over St. Louis (1-2) at Arlington, Texas.

Even with a preseason game left to play, Dallas is already starting to turn its attention to the regular-season opener Sept. 5 at the defending Super Bowl champion Giants. Romo isn't expecting to play at home against Miami on Wednesday night, a week before that game in New York.
