POST FALLS - Derek Bayley of Rathdrum, taking a break from his duties as Lakeland High quarterback, shot a 2-under-par 71 for a one-stroke lead after the first day of the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Public Links Championships on Saturday at The Links Golf Club.

Bayley used four birdies to counter two bogeys.

"I drove the ball really bad, but my short game was on and I putted really well," Bayley said. "It helps that I've played here a lot."

University of Idaho golfer Alex Pounds, who formerly played at Coeur d'Alene High and Community Colleges of Spokane, shot a 72 and is in a three-way tie for second.

In the Senior Men's division, Bob Christensen of Post Falls shot a 71 and is tied for first after the first day.

In the Women's division, Maddie Dodge of Post Falls is tied for ninth with a 78 to lead the local finishers.
