Lake City battles in loss to Eagle
EAGLE - Lake City fought the good fight but came up just short, falling 35-28 to Eagle on Friday night in the high school football season opener for both teams at Thunder Stadium.
Lake City closed within a touchdown on Brandon Johnson's 2-yard run with less than a minute left, but was unable to recover the onside kick and Eagle, which beat the Timberwolves 58-7 in the first round of the state 5A playoffs last year, ran out the clock.
"The kids got off the bus and played hard, didn't give up when they got down two touchdowns, and played hard to the end," Lake City assistant coach Ed DePriest said. "We (the coaches) were pleased and if we clean some things up, we can be a good football team."
Caden Robertson put Lake City up 7-0 with a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Eagle took the lead with a pair of long TD passes. Robertson’s 3-yard run tied it at 14 before Eagle took a 21-14 halftime lead.
Quarterback Bruce Shipley ran in from 1 yard out for Lake City to tie the game at 21 in the third quarter, before Eagle scored twice to go up by two touchdowns.
Lake City plays host to Kennewick (Wash.) next Friday.
